ERA Invests Nearly $51 Million in Alberta Innovation to Cut Emissions and Grow the Economy

EDMONTON, AB – Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) is investing nearly $51 million across 16 new projects worth nearly $180 million that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while driving innovation and economic growth in Alberta.

This funding comes from the industry-funded Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund, delivered through ERA.

Projects support technology innovation in oil and gas, agriculture, construction materials, transportation, manufacturing, waste, electricity, critical minerals, chemicals and fertilizers, and pulp and paper. They are located across the province including Peace River, Exshaw, the County of Newell, Fort Saskatchewan, Calgary, and Edmonton.

The investment supports breakthrough technologies across carbon capture, hydrogen, methane management, critical minerals, nuclear fuel, advanced manufacturing, and resource efficiency. Together, the projects will reduce emissions, strengthen Canadian supply chains, improve industrial competitiveness, and create new opportunities to commercialize Alberta-made technologies.

Newly funded projects

Construct a first-of-its-kind facility that produces high-performance asphalt binder from Alberta bitumen through an innovative low-emission process that eliminates process water use and simplifies conventional asphalt production.

Deploy a methanol-to-hydrogen fueling system and rapid deployment station to expand access to affordable high-pressure hydrogen refueling.

Design, build, and test a pilot-scale lithium refining system that converts low-purity crude lithium carbonate into an ultra high-purity, battery-grade material.

Develop the Brooks Newell Hydrogen Hub to stimulate hydrogen supply and demand in southeast Alberta through vehicle retrofits, electrolytic hydrogen production, and refueling infrastructure.

Develop and pilot-test a non-photosynthetic single-cell protein as a low-carbon, high-quality feed alternative for poultry, swine, and aquaculture.

Build a first-of-its-kind facility to recycle used motor oil into a low-sulphur, lower-carbon marine fuel.

Advance and validate BioLodestone, a natural nutrient solution that accelerates the breakdown of hydrocarbon contamination in soil.

Deploy an all-electric, drone-hoisted robot to install power line spacers and bird diverters, replacing helicopter and bucket trucks and cutting associated emissions.

Demonstrate the use of delithiated beta spodumene (DBS), a byproduct of spodumene processing, as a low-carbon supplementary cementitious material for concrete production.

Demonstrate Continuous Multilayered Encapsulation (CME) technology to improve the transportation of bitumen through existing pipeline infrastructure.

Evaluate a proposed uranium conversion facility to process Canadian-mined uranium concentrate into uranium hexafluoride for nuclear fuel production.

Develop technologies that convert captured carbon dioxide and clean hydrogen into low-emissions, low-cost methanol, a key feedstock for the manufacture of plastics and low-carbon fuels.

Enhance Qube Technologies’ continuous emissions monitoring platform to detect, quantify, and reduce methane and greenhouse gas emissions across industrial sites.

Advance the Peace River carbon capture project using Svante’s technology to capture approximately 500,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from Mercer’s pulp mill.

Demonstrate a next-generation methane pyrolysis reactor that produces low-emission hydrogen and high-value solid carbon.

Scale up production of lower-emissions cellulose materials from agricultural residues, beginning with hemp bast, for commercial textiles today and frontier materials tomorrow.

If successful, the funded projects are estimated to deliver cumulative greenhouse gas emissions reductions of 117,700 tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2030. The projects are also estimated to create 1,556 person-years of employment and contribute about $250 million to Alberta’s GDP. ERA funding recipients are required to publicly report project outcomes, including emissions reductions, job creation, environmental and economic benefits, and key lessons learned. Final outcomes reports are shared publicly to help advance technologies toward commercialization and inform future innovation efforts.
