Mangrove Lithium is planning a pilot-scale demonstration of Delithiated Beta Spodumene (DBS) as a reliable and alternative Canadian source of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). SCMs are derived from industrial byproducts (like slag from steelmaking or fly ash from coal) and added to replace clinker, an ingredient in cement. Clinker production is responsible for most of the emissions from cement, and the cement industry requires local additives to reduce emissions, improve product quality, reduce costs, and enhance durability. Mangrove Lithium aims to meet this need with delithiated beta spodumene (DBS), a byproduct that is generated during the spodumene processing step of producing battery-grade lithium. Unlike clinker, DBS is carbon-free and does not generate process emissions. This project focuses on upgrading Mangrove’s existing lithium refining pilot facility in Delta, British Columbia, to enable pilot-scale processing of spodumene as part of Mangrove’s lithium refining operation. In partnership with a cement manufacturer, Mangrove aims to conduct real-world performance testing in an operating cement plant to determine the suitability of using DBS as an SCM.
