Svante is advancing its Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) initiative to decarbonize Mercer’s pulp mill operation, located north of Peace River. Building on a previous ERA-funded project, Svante will conduct a front-end engineering design (FEED) study of their carbon capture technology and appraise a new CO2 storage site close to the site. The carbon capture project targets biogenic CO2 emissions from Mercer’s Peace River pulp mill and aims to reduce emissions by 500,000 tonnes per year. The captured CO2 will be conditioned, compressed, and transferred to a third-party CO2 transport and storage provider, which will develop a localized CO2 storage hub near the project site. Marking Svante’s first commercial-scale deployment of its patented VeloxoTherm™ solid sorbent-based carbon capture filter technology for post-combustion CO2 emissions, the project represents one of the first CCS applications on a pulp mill recovery boiler worldwide. This deployment is a critical milestone in the de-risking and commercialization of the technology that could unlock further deployments in other sectors, such as oil and gas and cement.
