With its partners, including Loon River First Nation, Athabasca Asphalt Company (AAC) plans to develop and operate a first-of-its-kind asphalt binder facility. This project aims to advance all of the technical, commercial, regulatory, environmental, and financial work required to reach a Final Investment Decision (FID). Asphalt binder is a form of bitumen that acts as the “glue” in asphalt pavement, binding aggregates together. AAC plans to implement the first commercial deployment of the Carbovator technology, a patented, modular design that converts Alberta bitumen into high-performance asphalt binder. The technology is designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, eliminate process water use, simplify conventional asphalt production by eliminating unnecessary fractionation steps, and produce high-quality asphalt binder along with valuable co-products. The facility aims to advance the commercialization of Bitumen Advanced Materials (BAM) as part of Alberta’s energy transition by producing low-emission, high-performance asphalt binder that creates greater value from Alberta’s bitumen resources while delivering a more sustainable, next-generation asphalt binder production solution.
