Cvictus is developing a non-photosynthetic single-cell protein (SCP), a novel alternative protein to deliver low-carbon-intensity, high-quality protein to animals in Alberta’s agricultural industry. The SCP has protein levels comparable to soybean meal and superior digestibility, meaning it can support animal nutrition and performance, particularly for poultry, swine and aquaculture operations. Unlike traditional feed crops, SCP can be produced with limited inputs, reducing direct emissions. Additionally, SCP does not require arable land or large volumes of water, significantly reducing the overall environmental footprint of livestock feed production. Industrial fermentation of SCP also allows for protein production near end-users, eliminating large, global transportation and the associated emissions. The overall aim of the project is to establish the SCP as a safe, effective, low-cost and low-carbon source of digestible protein and amino acids for poultry and swine.
