Chemshift has designed a lithium refining process capable of converting low-purity, crude lithium carbonate into ultra-high-purity, battery-grade material. Lithium is the fuel for electric vehicles and energy storage batteries, which are rapidly growing markets. However, there is a bottleneck in the supply chain: refining the mass amounts of lithium to the purity required for battery production. Using its solution, Chemshift aims to support mining companies and battery recyclers in producing low-cost, environmentally efficient, and locally made battery-grade lithium materials. During this project, Chemshift plans to design, build, and test an initial version of its lithium refining technology at pilot scale to demonstrate its effectiveness in producing battery-grade lithium carbonate from a variety of crude lithium feedstocks. The work focuses on scaling up novel process modules and operating the system with real-world lithium feedstock. This project aims to provide critical insight to inform Chemshift’s development of a subsequent, final demonstration plant, which will include all process modules at a commercially relevant scale.
