Zylotex Inc. Is developing a process that leverages hemp fiber — an agricultural byproduct — to produce Lyocell fibre. Lyocell is a man-made cellulose fiber derived from dissolving pulps, recognized for its sustainability and versatility in textiles, medical products, personal protective equipment, and more. Produced using a closed-loop process that recycles the solvent used to dissolve and extract the cellulose, lyocell fiber production requires minimal water and chemical emissions. Additionally, hemp requires fewer resources and grows faster than traditional fiber crops, meaning this project offers a more sustainable alternative to synthetic fibers and uses less resources compared to other natural fibres like cotton or wood-derived lyocell. The project aims to develop and demonstrate a pilot-scale technology for regenerating cellulose from hemp biomass. During the project, Zylotex will optimize the extraction and regeneration processes to ensure product quality and scale up from laboratory to pilot scale. This initiative can support the Canadian bioeconomy and position Alberta as a potential leader in lyocell fiber production.
