LiORA aims to advance and test its BioLodestone technology, a natural nutrient mix to remediate sites contaminated by hydrocarbons (gasoline, crude oil, diesel). These contaminated sites are an environmental and economic liability across Alberta and Western Canada. Current soil remediation methods require long site closure and are carbon-intensive, costly, and impractical at remote or low-security sites. BioLodestone is injected into contaminated soil to accelerate the natural breakdown of hydrocarbon pollutants by stimulating the activity of microorganisms already in the soil. The solution reduces emissions by effectively removing pollutants and decreasing the length of site closures, water use, and energy use compared to current remediation methods. During the project, LiORA plans to conduct 6 new field trials across in situ and ex situ sites across Western Canada while optimizing the formulation, injection method, and release timeframe with LiORA’s AI platform. Additionally, the project will engage the Alberta Energy Regulator and provincial counterparts through a cross-jurisdictional Regulatory Roundtable to accelerate regulatory acceptance.
