ERA’s Small Producers Energy Efficiency Deployment (SPEED) funding is an expansion of Energy Savings for Business. It supports eligible oil and gas producers in Alberta to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support job creation. Through expanded eligibility and the addition of new technology types, SPEED will accelerate the deployment of proven upgrades that help producers decrease operating costs and become more competitive, boosting economic recovery.

SPEED gives companies quick access to incentives up to $1 million per parent company for cost-effective energy and cost-saving technologies. The SPEED application window closed on May 9, 2022.

We are pleased to share that the project completion deadline for the Small Producers Energy Efficiency Deployment program has been extended until September 30, 2023. This means that you may now request additional time to complete your pre-approved projects.

Extension requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis for all existing pre-approved projects.

If you require an extension to complete your project, you will need to submit a Change Request to ERA for approval. Any approved deadline extensions will also be clearly shown on the Application Approval Form. Please see the Guidelines (Section 10) or the Change Request Instructions for more information.

ERA hosted an informational webinar to explore the new SPEED funding stream, an extension of the ESB suite of funding. An overview is provided of the opportunity, including scope and eligibility of the call, the submission process, timelines for decisions, available support for preparing an application, and more.

SPEED expands access for oil and gas producers, adding SPEED expands access for oil and gas producers, adding incentives for new measure categories to the already 60 commercially available technology types offered through Energy Savings for Business:

  • Air Fuel Ratio Controllers
  • High-Efficiency Engines
  • Pump Jack Electrification

The new funding stream enables increased participation from the oil and gas sector by including facilities that are regulated under Technology Innovations and Emission Reduction (TIER), opted-in to TIER, or not currently opted-in under the regulation.

*Please note: the minimum incentive request is $10,000.

All oil and gas facilities that have a facility code with an Operational Status of Active (Petrinex or equivalent) are eligible to participate. Projects must occur at facilities located within Alberta and be operated, owned or leased by the Participant, meet project timeline requirements, and follow the criteria outlined in the Participant Terms and Conditions.

4. Submit your application

You or your vendor can prepare the application in the system, but the Participant must submit the application by clicking the attestation. The Application Deadline is Monday, May 9, 2022, at 5 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7h).

As long as an application is submitted by the Application Deadline, it will be evaluated. As such, it is recommended that the focus be on a quality application versus a quick application submission.

5. Application Review, Evaluation and Funding

Once the projects have all been evaluated, we are targeting to notify successful projects in June 2022 (date may change depending on Applications submitted). If successful, you will receive a Funding Decision Notification. Unsuccessful Applicants will also be notified with an opportunity to follow up for feedback.

6. Construction and post-project application

Following your fully executed Participant Acceptance, you will have up to ten months to complete and submit your post-project application.

7. Payment and project verification

Post-project documentation will be submitted and approved by ERA. Some projects may also require either a virtual or in-person site visit as part of the review and verification process. The site visit process is also described in Guidelines. Once verified, payment will be initiated and completed.
