ERA Invests $15.7 Million in Five Edmonton Technology Projects

EDMONTON, AB – Today, the Government of Alberta announced $15.7 million in funding, delivered through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), for five new technology projects advancing hydrogen, advanced manufacturing and sustainable construction materials. Funding is sourced from the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund.

Edmonton’s deep industrial expertise gives companies a strong foundation for moving promising ideas into commercial use. The investment will help them validate their solutions, reach new markets, and create new jobs and business opportunities in Alberta.

If successful, the five projects are estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030, generate 504 person-years of employment and contribute $81 million to Alberta’s GDP.

Projects include:

Deploy a methanol-to-hydrogen fueling system and rapid deployment station to expand access to affordable high-pressure hydrogen refuelling.

Demonstrate the use of delithiated beta spodumene (DBS), a byproduct of spodumene processing, as a low-carbon supplementary cementitious material for concrete production.

Develop technologies that convert captured carbon dioxide and clean hydrogen into low-emissions, low-cost methanol, a key feedstock for the manufacture of plastics and low-carbon fuels.

Demonstrate a next-generation methane pyrolysis reactor that produces low-emission hydrogen and high-value solid carbon.

Scale up production of lower-emissions cellulose materials from agricultural residues, beginning with hemp bast, for commercial textiles today and frontier materials tomorrow.

ERA funding recipients are required to publicly report project outcomes, including emissions reductions, job creation, environmental and economic benefits, and key lessons learned. Final outcomes reports are shared publicly to help advance technologies toward commercialization and inform future innovation efforts.

ABOUT EMISSIONS REDUCTION ALBERTA (ERA):

For 17 years, ERA has invested revenues from the industrial carbon price paid by large emitters to accelerate the development and adoption of innovative clean technology solutions. Since its establishment in 2009, ERA has committed $1.19 billion toward 364 projects valued at over $10.8 billion. These investments are helping reduce emissions, create competitive industries, and support new business opportunities in Alberta. ERA-funded projects are estimated to deliver cumulative reductions of 28 million tonnes of CO2e by 2030 and 82.6 million tonnes by 2050.
