Storing Carbon in Depleted Oil and Gas Reservoirs

Carbon Management Canada (CMC) is looking at how to store CO2 in depleted oil and gas reservoirs at a facility outside of Brooks, Alberta. The process has bever been done before in the province. Injecting CO2 into these depleted reservoirs can be challenging because freezing in and around the site from the process can jeopardize the integrity of the well. CMC is trying to overcome these challenges to enable cost-efficient reuse of depleted reservoirs for long-term, secure storage. ERA committed $345,000 to the project through an international partnership with Accelerating CCS Technologies (ACT). In 2020, ERA joined the global initiative to invest in world-class innovation that can lead to safe and cost-effective CCUS technologies.
