This project will develop and test the implementation of a new manufacturing process for oriented strand board (OSB) and engineered strand-based products (ESP), resulting in new products and utilizing Alberta’s surplus poplar source. By utilizing and managing this resource in Alberta, significant GHG and economic benefits are associated with successful implementation of this technology long-term. This project aligns with West Fraser’s growth plans to address market demands for innovative forest products while also supporting economic diversification and sustainable forestry. Combining a new type of stranding device, the first-of-its-kind in North America, together with proprietary technologies licensed from Alberta Innovates, this project aims to extend West Fraser’s product mix to markets that require enhanced surface quality and strength. In doing so, the project contributes to the sustainable management of Alberta’s poplar resources. The success of this project aligns with West Fraser’s business strategy in Alberta. It responds to the market demand for innovative products while also supporting economic diversification and sustainable forestry, resulting in significant economic, social and environmental contributions to Alberta along with further GHG reduction potential.
