This project contemplates the use of Svante’s adsorption technology to capture CO2 from the flue gas stream of the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) at Suncor’s Edmonton refinery. The project focuses on a Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study which includes evaluating the engineering associated with the CO2 capture plant and transportation system. If constructed, the commercial application of this project has the potential to capture a significant portion of the current direct emissions from the Suncor Edmonton Refinery.

Currently, the most common method of CO2 capture is via amine absorption. However, exploring alternative carbon capture methods has the potential to lower costs and reduce the overall carbon footprint. Post-combustion capture could allow for simpler integration with existing assets. As a result, the FCCU flue gas stream has been selected by Suncor for a potential first commercial application of Svante’s post-carbon capture technology.
