LOOKING BACK AT GHGT-17

From October 20 -24, 2024, ERA and the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEAGHG) welcomed thousands of scientists, researchers, innovators, and industry leaders from around the world to Calgary for the 17th Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-17) conference.

Attracting more than 1,500 delegates from 47 countries, GHGT-17 was the largest in the series’ history. The conference offered an expanded program with 355 technical sessions, 10 Business Stream discussions, and over 500 technical e-poster presentations.

The conference also facilitated meaningful regional and international connections through networking events, including the Opening Reception, a Gala Dinner, and the always popular student event. Attendees also had an opportunity to participate in four tours to some of Alberta’s most compelling industrial sites including: 

  1. Containment & Monitoring Institute (CaMI) facility and Dinosaur Provincial Park, Brooks, Alberta.
  2. Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre (ACCTC) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City, Calgary, Alberta.
  3. Heidelberg Materials and Blindman Brewing, Edmonton and Lacombe, Alberta.
  4. Quest Carbon Capture and Storage facility, Shell Scotford Complex, Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta

Tickets sold out weeks in advance, making GHGT-17 a resounding success. The event showcased Alberta’s role as a leader in the energy transition and a hub for collaboration among industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers from around the world.

Our commitment to sustainability

The organizers of the GHGT-17 conference estimated that the event would produce approximately 745 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions. This estimate includes emissions from activities such as transportation, materials, travel, catering, and accommodation. To demonstrate our commitment to sustainability, $37,000 worth of offsets were purchased through the Alberta Emission Offset Registry.
