LESS EMISSIONS. MORE FUNDING.
Emissions Reduction Alberta’s (ERA) Methane Reduction Deployment Program is designed to help Alberta’s oil and gas industry cut methane emissions faster and more cost-effectively. Funded through Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) system, the program supports the deployment of commercial-ready technologies that detect, measure, and reduce methane. The program will continue until March 31, 2029, or until funding is fully allocated.
By providing up to 50% of eligible project costs—to a maximum of $1 million per project—ERA is making it easier for producers to act now, strengthen competitiveness, and demonstrate leadership in responsible energy production. With a focus on commercial-ready solutions, the program aims to significantly cut methane emissions while supporting economic growth and regulatory readiness.
ERA’s Methane Reduction Deployment Program runs concurrently with the NGIF Accelerator’s new Methane Reduction Demonstration Program, a $7 million initiative designed to advance near-commercial technologies. ERA and NGIF will work closely to deliver these two separate and distinct offerings in support of industry.
A free, hour-long informational webinar will take place on Thursday, November 27, 10-11 a.m. MST, during which details will be shared about the program, the application process, and applicants will have an opportunity to ask questions. A recording will be uploaded to our YouTube channel within 24 hours of the webinar.
Why Participate?
- Cut emissions fast: Methane is over 28 times more potent than CO₂. Every tonne reduced delivers significant environmental impact.
- Stay competitive: Meeting and exceeding regulatory requirements today strengthens market access and investor confidence tomorrow.
- Lower costs and risks: ERA funding helps offset capital costs, speeding up adoption and reducing financial barriers.
- Show leadership: Join a growing group of Alberta producers who are proving the world’s energy can be both reliable and responsible.
The program is purpose-built to lower capital risk, accelerate technology deployment, and help producers position themselves ahead of regulatory requirements. It’s not just a funding opportunity; it’s a strategic advantage for Alberta’s oil and gas sector.
Who Should Apply?
The program is open to:
- Oil and gas facility owners and operators (upstream and midstream) located in Alberta.
- Organizations ready to deploy proven, commercial-ready technologies that deliver measurable methane reductions.
- Applicants seeking support for projects that:
- Reduce, detect, and eliminate methane emissions
- Strengthen regulatory readiness
- Improve economic performance and efficiency
Facilities regulated under the TIER Regulation are not eligible, unless they are part of an aggregated facility as defined under TIER. Large Final Emitters (LFEs) and opt-in facilities are ineligible.
Eligible Technologies
ERA’s Methane Reduction Deployment Program offers continuous intake funding to accelerate the adoption of widely deployable, high-impact technologies that cut methane emissions. Eligible projects include:
- Engine optimization, retrofits, or replacements to reduce methane slip,
- Surface Casing Vent Flow (SCVF) capture solutions,
- Tank and compression routine venting mitigation solutions,
- Pneumatics, electrification, capture, or conversion to no-bleed systems,
- Casing gas conservation and destruction,
- Digital solutions, and
- Other innovative methane reduction technologies.

Alberta’s Leadership in Reducing Methane Emissions
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas—more than 28 times stronger than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. Alberta is a global leader in monitoring, managing and reducing these emissions. The province has reduced 52% of methane emissions from the conventional oil and gas sector since 2014, and 17 million tonnes of emissions have been prevented from being released through technology funding.
The province was the first oil and gas producing jurisdiction to put requirements on emissions from flaring, starting in the early 1990s, and the first regional government in North America to set a methane emissions reduction target for the oil and gas sector.
