Cenovus planned to demonstrate a single-step bitumen upgrading process that integrates water treatment with partial bitumen upgrading. Funded through ERA #2: Oil Sands Innovation and announced in 2018, the project goal was to build, install and operate the upgrader in preparation for a well pad scale-up at the Christina Lake steam-assisted gravity drainage facility. The funding relationship was ultimately cancelled in 2022.
