Lafarge Canada is conducting a pilot project to demonstrate using calcined clay as an innovative clinker substitute at its Exshaw Cement Plant, addressing one of cement manufacturing’s largest emission challenges. Clinker production accounts for 70% of greenhouse gas emissions in cement manufacturing, and this method could substantially lower the required quantity. By integrating calcined clay, the project seeks to lower the carbon intensity of Portland cement while maintaining its structural strength. If successful, this technology could offer a practical, immediate solution for reducing emissions and decreasing future CO2 demands of carbon capture systems.
