Accurately locating wellbores and assessing proximity to other wells or subsurface hazards without physical access to offset wells is a critical need in the industry. Weatherford’s closed-wellbore ranging service is a ranging technology that provides real-time measurements to locate nearby wells and subsurface hazards during Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) drilling operations without requiring physical access to the target wellbore.

The service combines a high-temperature sensor that measures force and torque across multiple axes with advanced cloud-based analytics to deliver accurate wellbore positioning data. Compared with traditional ranging technologies, the closed-wellbore ranging service can reduce environmental impact by eliminating the need to access offset wells and minimizing equipment mobilization and site disturbance. Emissions may also be reduced through improved operational efficiency, enabling more accurate drilling execution and planning decisions.

This project will support validation of Weatherford’s closed-wellbore ranging service under Alberta field conditions. The work is intended to advance the technology from prototype to commercial readiness while demonstrating its environmental and operational benefits for SAGD and other drilling applications.
