The project will be the first-of-its-kind used motor oil (UMO) recycling deployment in the world. Through this project, EnerPure will convert UMO into a low-sulphur, lower-carbon-intensity marine fuel by taking a novel and innovative approach to recycling. In Alberta, the Alberta Recycling Management Authority collects 91.5 litres of UMO annually, but the province has no UMO recycling capacity to match these collections, and the UMO is principally burnt as a cheap industrial fuel. EnerPure’s UMO recycling process includes pre-treatment, thermal heating, and distillation, which builds upon the success of their Manitoba Pilot Plant. Along with reducing emissions, the project will reduce air and water pollutants by preventing the burning of UMO.
