Clean technologies proven in Alberta’s demanding industrial environment are reducing emissions beyond the province’s borders and generating export revenue.
One of ERA’s strongest international success stories comes from Westgen Technologies. Its EPOD technology provides remote power generation for wellsite pneumatics, replacing methane-powered devices with instrument air—a cleaner, dryer, oil-free compressed air—and helping eliminate methane venting at remote wellsites.
What started as an Alberta-developed solution is now being deployed at hundreds of U.S. wellsites, demonstrating how technologies developed for Alberta’s industrial challenges can scale into international markets.
Since commercialization, 350 units have been deployed in the U.S. By 2030, those deployments are projected to offset up to 10 million tonnes of CO2e. This is a clear example of Alberta innovation scaling into measurable global impact.
Another success story comes from Kuva and their methane imaging for continuous leak detection and quantification system. Developed and tested in Alberta, it is now deployed in hundreds of units outside the province, helping operators find and fix leaks before they become a larger problem.
The impact so far:
- 39,000 tonnes of CO2e in annualized emissions reduction potential
- 140,000 tonnes in reduction projected annually by 2030 as deployment grows toward 1,000 units
A new analysis of ERA-supported projects shows how Alberta-developed technologies are being deployed around the world–U.S., Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, and Australia– creating economic value while helping reduce emissions beyond the province. The analysis draws on project-level data and a survey of ERA-funded companies, providing a picture of both current international deployment and future export potential.
At a Glance
- 122 of 155 active ERA-supported projects have export potential
- 54 of 187 completed projects (29%) have realized sales, customers or partnerships deploying their technologies outside Alberta
- Over 50% of all ERA-supported projects have either reduced emissions outside Alberta or identified export markets as a key growth driver
- $102.3 million in export revenue has already been reported by surveyed companies
Among surveyed ERA-funded companies, 65% have realized international exports, 58% are building or have established international partnerships, and 32% have secured foreign investment.
Where Alberta Technology is Showing Up
From agriculture to carbon management, ERA-supported projects are moving from innovation to real-world deployment:
- Agriculture — Scaling smarter production: Greenhouse-mounted solar, cattle-breeding software and feed additives that reduce enteric methane are improving efficiency across North America and beyond.
- Water — Turning Alberta expertise into global solutions: Water management solutions developed for energy operations are being demonstrated across Canada, while industrial water treatment technologies are generating revenue from international markets.
- Methane Management — Tackling emissions at the source: Detection, monitoring and mitigation technologies are helping operators identify and reduce methane emissions across the U.S., South America, the Middle East, Asia and beyond.
- Carbon Management — Capturing and storing emissions: Carbon capture and sequestration technologies are advancing across North America and Europe, helping industries reduce emissions while creating opportunities for Alberta innovation.
- Bioenergy & Biofuels — Creating lower-carbon alternatives: Biomethanol and biocrude technologies are advancing toward commercialization in Europe, creating new pathways for lower-carbon fuels and products.
Looking ahead, methane management and advanced materials show the strongest export potential—positioning Alberta companies to capture growing international demand for technologies that can reduce emissions while improving industrial performance.
ERA reinvests funding from the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund along with funding from the Canadian government into technologies that reduce emissions. Our mandate focuses on new and innovative technologies—which means many ERA-supported projects are still early in their commercialization journey, with export potential yet to be fully realized.
