NAIT Applied Research, in collaboration with COSIA member companies, technology providers, and Indigenous communities, is launching a project to create a Standardized Tailings Technology Evaluation Framework. This initiative will accelerate the adoption of high-performing chemical additives for oil sands tailings treatment through transparent, data-driven testing.

The Framework will establish key performance indicators and evaluate additives across four major treatment categories, including thickeners, centrifuges, in-line flocculation, and flocculation with sand. Pilot-scale trials at Coanda’s Edmonton facility will ensure scalability and field readiness. By engaging Indigenous communities through training, employment, and knowledge-sharing, this project promotes collaboration and speeds up environmental improvements in Alberta’s oil sands.
