Building on a previous project funded by ERA, Quantiam Technologies aims to scale and demonstrate its innovative processes for low-cost, low-carbon-intensity production of Clean Methanol. Clean Methanol can be used as a feedstock to manufacture carbon-neutral or carbon-negative olefins for plastics production, supporting decarbonization in the Alberta petrochemical sector through the licensable Methanol-to-Olefins process. Quantiam’s process uses autothermal reforming of natural gas to produce Blue (Clean) Hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide, then employs its proprietary, simplified, one-step, newly catalyzed process to make Clean Methanol. Manufacturing olefins from a low-carbon-intensity methanol feedstock yields low-C polyolefins and, in turn, CO2-based plastics, providing an alternative way to sequester carbon while generating revenue. These innovations can enable the economic production of key Alberta commodities with significantly less energy, emissions, and carbon intensity. The project aims to continue late-stage scaling of the technologies and to construct, commission, and operate an integrated pilot plant facility in Edmonton, producing up to 100 litres of Clean Methanol per day.
