Achieving on-farm carbon neutrality through the datafication of waste
IWR Technologies Ltd.’s livestock division Livestock Water Recycling, has developed a technology (known as PLANT) that transforms paunch manure into two distinct natural fertilizers, reducing on-farm methane emissions by up to 82 per cent in cattle processing. PLANT uses progressive water treatment technology to extract manure particles from water and segregate these into valuable fertilizer […]

RNG from Pulp Mill Waste
ATCO is striving to adapt an existing amine upgrading technology that can handle the unique properties of a biogas stream with extremely high hydrogen sulfide levels to the Forest Products sector and produce valuable renewable natural gas (RNG). ATCO is working to demonstrate the viability of this system at Millar Western’s pulp mill, and if […]

Using Ag waste and craft brewer’s grain to grow high value mushrooms and produce livestock feed
Ceres has developed a system which uses otherwise wasted brewery and agricultural byproducts as a growing media for specialty mushroom cultivation. The mushrooms grown in Ceres’ system are higher quality, fresher, more affordable and more sustainable than what is currently available. During the mushroom growing process, fibers in the growing media are broken down by […]

Opti-Cart
The proposed technology by Optimal Agricultural Equipment Ltd is Opti-Cart, a dual-purpose grain cart/seed tender unit for the grain farming industry. This unit is suitable for use as a grain cart in the fall during harvest season and as a seed tender cart in the spring to deliver seed and fertilizer to a seeding tool. […]

Doef’s Greenhouses and Horsehoe Power CO2 and Heat Capture
Doef’s Greenhouses is constructing a 13-acre hydroponic vegetable greenhouse and Horseshoe Power is constructing a co-located tri-generation power plant. The tri-generation plant utilizes natural gas from surrounding natural gas fields as fuel and generates electricity, heat, CO2 and water for the greenhouse. Otherwise waste heat will be recovered and used to heat the greenhouse and […]

Landfill Gas to Renewable Natural Gas Project
The project will explore opportunities to upgrade landfill gas (LFG) at Clover Bar Landfill and inject it into Alberta’s natural gas system as renewable natural gas (RNG). Stakeholders in the Clover Bar Landfill, the City of Edmonton and Capital Power, are exploring these possible opportunities.

Invigor Bioenergy – Technology Upgrade
Deployment of a retrofit of the former Kyoto Biofuels facility in Lethbridge, Alberta with a technology suite that will allow the plant to process local agricultural waste and other lower-quality waste feedstocks into a low-GHG biodiesel and crude glycerin.

Multi-site Cement Industry Low Carbon Fuel Implementation and Supply Chain Optimization
The objective of this project is to develop new fuel pathways to lower the carbon footprint of the cement industry. Cement and concrete industries are large emitters of carbon dioxide. This project will measure air emissions at combustion under full scale commercial operations, optimizing the process of combustion by understanding the fluid dynamics, and developing […]

Demonstration of Reduced Enteric Methane Emissions in Growing/Finishing Beef Cattle
Viresco, DSM and a consortium of Alberta agricultural partners have worked together to demonstrate a feed ingredient for cattle that significantly reduces cattle-based methane emissions. The ingredient can be introduced to regular feeding regimes to reduce the methane produced by each animal, enabling substantial reductions in emissions from Alberta’s beef and dairy industries.

Deploying an Advanced Analytics Platform to Quantify Livestock GHG Emissions and Monitor Reduction Strategies at Individual Animal and Whole Operation Scale
Alberta has one of the largest beef herds in the world. The production of beef and dairy contributes to Alberta’s overall GHG emissions, specifically methane, which is released from manure and from the animals as a natural part of their digestion. Reducing GHG emissions through selecting the most efficient cattle offers an opportunity to reduce […]
